Con un acume sorprendente, uno spietato humour nero e un selvaggio estro letterario, giocando beffardo con le nebbie sempre più fitte della sua coscienza e i problemi agli occhi che gli fanno vedere il mondo blu, Busken registra tutto ciò che accade, riflette sulla vita e la vecchiaia, commenta i medici e gli altri pazienti in provocatorie parodie della contemporaneità. E rievoca ricordi di un’infanzia senza amore e di una madre gelida e ostile che ha segnato la sua tormentosa esistenza nell’ombra, asserragliata dietro libri e fantasticherie, in costante fuga dal dolore, dalla paura, dal mondo. Opera spassosa e struggente, di una poesia sanguigna e amara, definita «un monumento eretto alla lingua», “Il cliente Busken” è l’atto di resistenza di un uomo al proprio tramonto e a quello di un’intera epoca culturale, un romanzo in cui risuona il Novecento di Joyce, Proust, Svevo, Canetti.
