Cresce nella miseria più crudele, Tarare, finché, quando è ormai un ragazzo, il contrabbandiere che vive con la madre non lo costringe a fuggire. È proprio in questo momento che in lui accade qualcosa di strano: un appetito insaziabile, sconfinato, mostruoso inizia a perseguitarlo. Non lo abbandonerà mai. Solo al mondo, privo di qualsiasi scopo, costantemente attanagliato dalla fame, Tarare intraprenderà una lunga, disperata peregrinazione attraverso la Francia, che lo vedrà unirsi a una combriccola di ladri nelle vesti di fenomeno da baraccone grazie alle sue abbuffate, e poi giungere a Parigi, dove si aggregherà alle truppe rivoluzionarie nella speranza di essere nutrito. A guidarlo in questo incredibile viaggio, soltanto una vana, segreta speranza: quella di ricongiungersi prima o poi con l’amata madre.
